Description
The Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória [São Bento da Vitória Monastery], classified as a National Monument, is one of the most important religious buildings of the city. The first stone of the Noble Cloister was cast in 1608 but the work was only concluded in 1728. In 1808, during the Peninsular War, the monastery was converted into Military Hospital. In 1835, after the expulsion of the Religious Orders, it became a Military Court and Casa de Reclusão [Seclusion House] as well as headquarters for the 31st Infantry and Engineering. More recently, the monastery was subject to renovation work lead by architects Carlos Guimarães and Luís Soares Carneiro. We can highlight in their intervention the roof of the Noble Cloister – a metallic acoustic shell with a simple and delicate structure that brings value to the space without challenging it.
