Description

Originally, in 1345, The Corpus Christi Convent was situated a little closer to the Douro River. Due to the floods, a new building was erected in the 17th Century, at a slightly higher quota. We highlight the monastic chapel with an octagonal plan by Pantaleão Vieira, and the high choir commissioned by Prioress Catarina, in 1680, to carpentry master Domingos Lopes. The space is garnished with quality woodcarving, with vegetable inspired drawings and a box coffered ceiling divided in 49 sections with saints from the Dominican Order as well as other orders. Its 15 central panels allude to the life and death of Christ. The recent restoration work enhanced the visibility of one of the best-kept secrets of the city.
