Description

Projected by architect José Marques da Silva, the Teatro de São João [Theatre of São João], inaugurated March 7th 1920. Twelve years only after its opening it started being called São João Cine, a place essentially devoted to the screening of films. Later, the building started deteriorating until it was acquired by the State in 1922 and officially became Teatro Nacional São João [São João National Theatre]. Renovated, remodelled and reequipped, according to the project of architect João Carreira from 1993 to 1995, it once again started having regular artistic activities. The visitors of this “Italian-like theatre” will have a chance to get to know the backstage of a building that mirrors all contradiction (or compromise) between tradition, settled in its granite façades, and the technologic innovation of the flagstones, beams and reinforced concrete staircases.
