Description
Conceived with tourism in mind, the Vila Nova de Gaia aerial tramway is an infrastructure that connects the riverside quota of the Port Wine Cellars to the highest quota of the city, near the upper lane of the D. Luís I Bridge and the access to the Monastery of Serra do Pilar. Designed by the office Menos é Mais (that belongs to architects Cristina Guedes and Francisco Vieira de Campos), the aerial tramway has a station below covered in metallic strips that favours a technologic transparency and an upper station in reinforced concrete that leans over the cliff with a relatively domestic scale. In this station, a group of ramps and terraces evoke a “promenade architecturale” with the Porto landscape as scenery. A set of oculus “carved” in the concrete prepares you for a refined game, rare in infrastructures with highly demanding functions.
