Description

The building complex of the Farol da Boa Nova de Leça da Palmeira [Boa Nova Lighthouse in Leça da Palmeira] opened in 1927, having previously housed a school of lighthouse keepers. With a plan developed in a U shape, following the principles of symmetric composition, the lighthouse’s tower emerges in the centre exacerbating its phallic structure. With 46 meters in height, the Boa Nova lighthouse is the second largest in Portugal and the first to have an electric lantern installed in the northern area of the country. Its circular balcony is, surely, the best place to enjoy a panoramic view of the Matosinhos coast. If you don’t particularly like elevators, accept the challenge of going up the 225 steps towards the light.
