Description

The original design of the Monastery of the Serra do Pilar dates back to the 16th Century and its authorship is assigned to Diogo de Castilho and João de Ruão. The “roundabout church” as well as the circular cloister are mandatory but we propose the discovery of another theme: the connection between the monastery, that curiously invoked in its foundation São Salvador do Mundo, to the invincibility that the city of Porto brags about. It was here that the Wellington troops set their headquarters to regain the city occupied by the French and, later, it was also here that the liberal forces stood during the Siege of Porto. Today the Monastery is still run by the 5th Artillery Regiment and its modern barracks are available to visit and understand how to “save the world” through divine intervention and weaponry.
